Lasting Peace of Mind
If you are wondering how to feel good, I mean on a fundamental level deep down inside yourself, you have to look at your baseline.
Are you happy?
To be clear, I am not talking about the temporary emotion of joy or feeling elated.
A Definition of Happiness
HAPPINESS:
- Is not what is happening to you in any given moment.
- Is how you experience what is happening to you: your presence and acceptance in the moment without self-judgment.
- Depends on your ability to emotionally regulate; coping with what is happening, good or bad, is essential to whether you feel happiness or not.
- Requires finding the right balance of acceptance and regulation so you can feel the joys of life and handle the down times.
No Matter What
First off, know that no matter how much success or wealth you have or how many difficult circumstances you face, these things do not control how happy you are.
Therefore, happiness is not sunshine and rainbows all the time. It is the peace of mind that comes with truly feeling, experiencing your emotions fully without self-judgment about them, all the time.
It comes from the ability to calm down when you are upset and cheer up when you are down. That’s called emotional regulation.
Happiness is having enough natural energy to get through the day without artificial stimulants.
Likewise, it is being able to fully feel life’s joys and sorrows without being overwhelmed or crushed by them.
In other words, happiness is not always about feeling “happy.” It is more.
It is the ability to experience good feelings and not be controlled by bad ones.
