Mindfulness – Not Just for Hippies

Mindfulness is a buzzword right now. It calls up images of “seekers” sitting cross-legged and touching their fingertips.

But really, you can practice mindfulness anywhere, any time.

Quite simply, mindfulness is intentionally focused attention. You can focus on your breath or your thoughts. You can focus on any of your five senses, what you’re doing at any given moment or anything you want.

Have you noticed the taste of your food lately? Ever drive across town and wonder how you got there? Ever yell at your kids or spouse and don’t know why?

When you are mindful, you notice what you are doing, on purpose. That’s it. Nothing more.

And as simple as it sounds, something powerful is happening in your brain when you practice mindfulness. It’s called integration, and it makes you mentally better. The wiring in your brain gets faster. And you get better at controlling yourself no matter how emotionally charged you get.
